The Lost Art of Prayer

What It Is Like Asking Your Dad For Help

“Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, Your name be honored as holy.”

Matthew 6:9

----------

When you were growing up, what was it like to approach your Dad and ask him for anything? Were you at ease, knowing your Dad would warmly welcome your conversation and requests, or were you hesitant and cautious, uncertain about his response, and if he would be irritated by your interruption?  What was your tone like with your dad? Were you demanding and ungrateful, believing that he owed you something?  Did you speak in a disrespectful way, or did you measure every word with anxious fear?

The idea of coming to God as a son comes to a father will be greatly influenced by the nature of man’s relationship with his earthly dad.  For some, approaching your heavenly Father in prayer is as familiar and safe as crashing down on the living room couch.  God the Father is comforting, warm, and inviting, and there is no reservation in entering into His presence.  God is a loving Father, and He longs to welcome you into His embrace.  For others, praying to a heavenly Father feels cold, intimidating, and unnatural.  Years of hurt, fear, and mistrust from your earthly father have tainted your relationship with God.

In both instances, men should remember these words given by Jesus as the model prayer for His disciples, and keep two key ideas in mind when praying to the God of the universe-

1) God is an approachable Father - No matter what your relationship with your earthly father may have been like, you can come to God knowing that His love for you is unsurpassing and unbreakable.  No matter what you have done, or will ever do, God’s infinite love will never be swayed by your behavior or belief.

2) God is holy and to be honored - There is truth in the saying, “familiarity breeds contempt,” and believers should be wary of becoming too laissez faire in their relationship with God.  God is loving, but He is also a holy Father that demands to be honored by our words and our walk.  Do not take God’s gracious love for granted, or mistake it as permission to disrespect His name.

The next time you pray, imagine yourself walking into a throne room and standing in God’s presence.  Speak to Him with the word “Father” on your tongue, and take note of the emotions that produces, and the posture that creates.

Reflection:  (Don’t skip this!)

  • What do I need to know?
  • How do I need to grow?
  • Where does this need to show up in my life?
