Lifelong Perseverance and Spiritual Progress

The Power To Endure

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured from sinners such hostility against Himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.”

Hebrews 12:1–4

----------

Super Bowl winning Head Coach Bill Parcell used to say, "the most important ability is availability." Some guys have immense gifts and talent, but if they cannot stay healthy, stay focused, and be ready for game day, their abilities are wasted.  Endurance in sports, and in life is of far greater importance than excelling at sporadic intervals.  This is especially true when it comes to being a man of God, and a godly husband, father, and leader.  If your “team” (wife, kids, church, etc) cannot count on you to be available day in and day out, they will lose trust and respect for you.

Three times in this passage in Hebrews we read a form of the word “endure.” God wants you to keep going, for as long as it takes, and no matter what it takes until the day you die or Jesus returns.  Jesus says to us Christians who are living in the final days, “Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”  How committed to the life of Christ are you? Jesus endured the cross, endured the shame, and endured the hostility of sinners so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

Here is the secret to everlasting endurance- It’s not you… it’s Christ in you.  All the power, strength, endurance and capacity you are going to need to finish the race, fight the good fight, and keep the faith is only available through Jesus Christ.

You can run to the point of exhaustion, because Christ has power and energy that are outside of your own resources. “For this I labor [often to the point of exhaustion], striving with His power and energy, which so greatly works within me.” Colossians 1:29 (AMP)

You can die to yourself daily, because Christ is resurrecting you daily too.  “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Galatians 2:20

The life of an IMPACT Player is not about speed, or making a splash, but being a consistent, trustworthy, and available man who can be counted on to rise to the occasion every time the coach calls his name.  Will you make that commitment? Call a mentor, pastor, or friend today, and share your commitment to be a lifelong IMPACT Player.
