What George Costanza Taught Us About Being Busy

Man with a overwhelming and busy schedule

Remember George Costanza from the TV show Seinfeld? In once episode, Costanza explained that the secret to “looking busy” is “to act annoyed all the time.” George was on to something; people who really are busy all the time seem to have very little patience or tolerance for the slightest inconvenience. Frustration, or annoyance is really nothing more than low-grade anger, and it is boiling underneath the surface of most chronically busy men. Whenever life causes their busy schedules to skip like a scratched-up record, out comes the frustration, annoyance, and anger. Unfortunately, our wives, children and loved ones off suffer the brunt of our busyness blowups and our relationships get strained by the stress of our stressful lives.

If people tend to avoid or walk on eggshells around you because you are so busy, it probably means that they have caught some of your shrapnel and they are keeping their distance. Simply put, a hurried man cannot have deep, caring relationships. Intimacy and instancy cannot peacefully coexist.

If you find yourself regularly annoyed or frustrated by the inconveniences of your friends and families, it may be time to consider stepping off the crazy train.

Stepping Off The Crazy Train: Loving & Leading A Counter-Cultural Life is a new IMPACT Cohort study for men who want to grow as husbands, fathers, and leaders.
